Definition of Flash SD Memory Cards

An SD Memory Card, also referred to as Secure Digital Memory, is a type of non-volatile digital storage media that is created using a Flash Memory Format. These devices are similar to the older multimedia format but have improved features and different physical dimensions.

SD Cards are commonly used to save digital media files and are effective with both audio, video and picture files. A variety of both commercial and home use devices utilize the SD Card technology with digital cameras, camcorders, video recorders, PDA’s and satellite navigation systems being primary examples.

The SD card measures slightly thicker than the MMC card and also has a distinctive asymmetrical shape to prevent the card from being inserted incorrectly. Many SD cards also include a write-protect tab that allows the user to turn the data into a read only format. This optional feature helps to eliminate the possibility of accidentally deleting important files that may be unable to be recovered. SD cards are available in several sizes with various storage level capabilities.
